Letter Aug. 04, 2000  Vrindavana update Rape accused found dead in jail Vrindavana imbroglio SD update An ISKCON employee, Sureswar Das, in judicial custody for allegedly raping a widow, was on Thursday found dead in his cell in Presidency Jail. Inspector General (Prisons), Balkar Singh, told that Das alias Sarkar, had "committed suicide" by hanging himself with a towel. Das, caretaker of an ISKCON unit in the metropolis, had allegedly raped a widow on June 29 in his office premises. His bail was rejected by a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court on July 20. Singh said as per rules, he would seek a detailed report on Das' death.

The damning entries in the diary prompted the jail authorities to lodge a complaint with the police. Subsequently cases of "abatement to suicide" and "conspiracy" were registered with the Hastings police station against the eight monks, seven of them based in Mayapur and one at Albert Road.
