Death In The Marketplace: A fearless king once dispatched his servant on an errand. Searching through the marketplace for roots and herbs desired by his master, the servant noticed a dark stranger standing in the shadows observing him closely. Made uneasy by constant attention, the servant approached the stranger intent on questioning him. However, when looking into the eyes of the watcher, he felt a chill rush down his spine making hairs on the nape of his neck stand erect in fear. "It is Death himself," thought the servant alarmed. "I must make my escape immediately!" And off he ran as fast as his legs could carry him.

"Where are my roots and herbs? !" bellowed the king, when he noticed the empty hands of his servant. "Sire," begged the servant breathlessly, "I need a fast horse urgently." "Settle down!" demanded the king. "What's all the fuss about?" "Death!" cried the servant, "He has come to take me! Please give me a fast horse so that I may ride four hundred miles to Santal, and thereby escape Him." "Supply this man with my fastest stallion!" ordered the sympathetic king, "and do so with the utmost haste." So it was that the servant astride a fast horse departed full gallop for Santal, to avoid being captured by Death.

The king, stirred by curiosity, went out to the marketplace in search of the dark figure called Death. Seeing the solitary figure standing in the shadows, the fearless king approached Him. "Who are you?" asked the king. "I am Death," admitted the stranger. "Why did you frighten my servant?" questioned the king boldly. "I did not mean to startle him," confessed Death, "I was merely surprised to see him here." And why is that?" asked the king, bemused. "Well," said Death, "I have an appointment with him in Santal at sundown." (Excerpt: Tales from Bre-Arken. A book by the author)

NARANARAN DASA PLEASE EXPLAIN FURTHER

Anon Please could someone explain the following extract which appeared in the latest PADA newsletter, which surprised me somewhat (can I be surprised by anything anymore!?), as I was under the impression that Vishnujana's character was unblemished. Or have I simply misunderstood the context to mean that he was part of the group that tried to take over c.1970? "Madhava and Tirtha Maharaja's had already been implicated in the attempt to overthrow Srila Prabhupada in 1970 (Through the "gang of four" headed by Brahmananda, Vishnujana etc) which led to his 1970 letter in which he spoke of "withdrawing from daily activities of Isckon" due to "certain discourtesies" that had been extended to Him."

Dear PADA,

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to his Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada!

I just wanted to commend you for running some very good articles lately, especially the ones on the poisoning of Srila Prabhupada and his mission, and the ones on Narayana Maharaja. To drop back a bit, I also want to say how much I enjoyed reading the article about the "Halloween Harinama" in Hollywood with devotees dressed up like Krsna, Lord Nrsinghadev, and Hanuman -- what a great idea! And I loved reading Saksi Gopal d's description in todays newletter (11/23) about Sai Baba's "electrifying" performance on stage in the late '80s/early '90s.

I also wanted to make a couple of comments about the poisoning of Srila Prabhupada and his International Society for Krishna Consciousness: First, I have read in your newsletter some calls for getting investigative reporters, law and government agencies involved in India to investigate the poisoning of Srila Prabhupada. On the surface this sounds like a good idea, but have you really thought this through? What if a government agency in India got involved and they decided that in order to further their investigation they had to disturb Srila Prabhupada's Mahasamadhi and dig up his body (please excuse this indelicate term, but I don't know how else to put it). That would be the absolute worst-case scenario that anyone could imagine, I'm sure you will agree. Do you know what safeguards there would be, if any, against that happening if we were able to launch some type of formal investigation in India?

[PADA: There are many worse case scenarios. One is that if we wait too long: the poison case may no longer be applicable due to the statute of limitations. And letting the culprits go scot free is also not a good scenario in our opinion. As for thinking things through, yes we have thought this out. The best way to handle embezzlers, molesters, poisoners and so on is to have a group of senior devotees gather together, form a containment and correction committee, and go to the police and hire their own lawyers and handle their own case. That is what we asked for in 1980, let us make a lawsuit for fraud. This never seems to occur?

So yes, if outside forces handle your case it is not ideal, just like people are complaining now about the Windle Turley case. Of course, no one else had launched any broad case, they wanted the culprits to go scot free and to have no justice for the victims? That is also not a good idea. So anyway, that is the way that case has evolved. Agreed, it would have been better that a group of devotees had hired Windle Turley and made their own wording to the complaint, their own direction for the case. Anyway, as for the poison issue, in India it is often understood that a saintly person should not have his body disturbed and we would hope that could be applied to our case. We also think that the nature of the poison case is that it cannot go as badly as the molestation case because of its very nature. What we had asked for therefore was that the devotees try to find a group of people higher up in Indian or Bengali society who would have sympathy for Srila Prabhupada right from the start. So even if they did the case pro-bono, or even if a movie actor spoke on his behalf demanding justice, they would do it to serve him and not to help his poisoners.]

DD: Secondly, everyone is always talking about the philosophical deviations that have been absorbed from the Gaudiya Matha that have had such obvious poisonous effects on Srila Prabhupada's mission. But what you don't hear is anyone talking about the other half of the "religion/philosophy" formula, namely the Yuga-dharma Mahamantra congregational chanting of the Holy Names. I believe with every atom of my being that when devotees began, in the early 1970's, to drink in through their ear holes the milk of the Holy Names touched by the flicking, serpentine tongues of Srila Prabhupada's enemies in the Gaudiya Matha, that THAT is when the philosophical deviations really took hold. This is because the hearts of many in ISKCON were being "softened up" into being receptive to the Gaudiya Matha's sound vibration by their contaminated "wolf-in-sheep's-clothing kirtan." To this day, I must flee in the opposite direction whenever I hear this Gaudiya Matha type of chanting in Srila Prabhupada's former temples, since I just cannot bear to contemplate all that this implies. And this is a very sad state of affairs for me because congregational chanting of the Holy Names was always the main thing that sustained me as a devotee.

Without it, I am hopelessly lost. So it appears that the simplest and surest formula for reforming the hearts and minds of devotees everywhere is to go back to the source -- one lone pure devotee sitting underneath a tree and transcendentally vibrating the Holy Names of his Beloved Lord, calling both the curious and the sincere seekers to follow him in his march back to our Eternal Home. From that one poignant tableau, an entire international movement was manifest which was poised, we tend to forget, to incite a glorious worldwide spiritual revolution against the shackles of gross materialism, which have turned the entire population of the earth into slaves of their own insatiable material desires. But instead of fulfilling that mandate, we allowed ourselves to be lured away by the catchy folk tunes and exotic East Indian beats that beckoned from the sidelines, which then led us down the path to the Gaudiya Math's philosophical poisons. I ask you, was it worth it? So I am entreating all sincere Prabhupadanugas to please not be negligent in our loyalty to Srila Prabhupada in this most vital of areas: the Yuga-dharma congregational chanting of the Holy Names of Krishna. If you can't remember how Srila Prabhupada chanted (which many people apparently cannot), there are many recordings available -- listen to them, absorb them into your hearts, and then respond accordingly. Sravanam kirtanam. "If you chant like THAT," I once heard Srila Prabhupada say after one particularly potent kirtan which was done according to his example, "this Krishna Consciousness Movement will spread very quickly all over the world!"

I love you all, my dear Godbrothers and Godsisters.
Hare Krishna. Your servant,
Dinadayadri dasi

[PADA: Agreed, the most encouraging thing that we have seen in years is the local Berkeley Hare Krishna Youth. They worship Srila Prabhupada and do harinama. There are also little pockets of harinama going on here and there, so it will take time, but eventually it will revive.]

2) NARAYANA MAHARAJA AND SRIDHARA MAHARAJA INSULTED SRILA PRABHUPADA.

From the letter below one can see that history repeats itself because they are conditioned souls they ventured to initiate Srila Prabhupadas disciples. Thus, they were caught out as Srila Prabhupada clearly says of the action. SO IT IS DELIBERATE TRANSGRESSION OF VAISNAVA ETIQUETTES AND OTHERWISE A DELIBERATE INSULT TO ME. I DO NOT KNOW WHY HE HAS DONE LIKE THIS BUT NO VAISNAVA WILL APPROVE OF THIS OFFENSIVE ACTION.

68-03-26. Letter: Mukunda In meantime, I have also received one letter which is very depressing from Hrsikesa. I understand that he has been induced by Bon Maharaja to be initiated by him for giving him shelter, and this foolish boy has accepted his inducement. This isn't very happy news, and I have replied Hrsikesa's letter in the following words, which please take note, and in the future, we shall be very cautious about them. "My Dear Hrsikesa, Please accept my blessings. I am in due receipt of your letter of March 14, 1968, and I am greatly surprised. I AM GREATLY SURPRISED FOR BON MAHARAJA'S INITIATING YOU IN SPITE OF HIS KNOWING THAT YOU ARE ALREADY INITIATED BY ME. SO IT IS DELIBERATE TRANSGRESSION OF VAISNAVA ETIQUETTES AND OTHERWISE A DELIBERATE INSULT TO ME. I DO NOT KNOW WHY HE HAS DONE LIKE THIS BUT NO VAISNAVA WILL APPROVE OF THIS OFFENSIVE ACTION. I very much appreciate your acknowledgement of my service unto you and you will always have my blessings, BUT YOU MUST KNOW THAT YOU HAVE COMMITTEE. A GREAT BLUNDER. I do not wish to discuss on this point more elaborately now, but if you are desirous to know further about it, I shall be glad to give you more enlightenment. Mukunda is not here. He has gone to L.A. Hope you are well." If Hrsikesa writes you letter I think you may avoid reply. I DO NOT APPROVE BOTH HRSIKESA'S AND BON MAHARAJA'S THIS OFFENSIVE ACTION. Hoping you are both well.

Note: In venturing to initiate Srila Prabhupada's disciples ---they could not even have understood the philosophy properly. As It is clearly stated: A DEVOTEE MUST HAVE ONLY ONE INITIATING SPIRITUAL MASTER BECAUSE IN THE SCRIPTURES ACCEPTANCE OF MORE THAN ONE IS ALWAYS FORBIDDEN. For them to Initiate Srila Prabhupadas disciples they would be falling into a trap of REJECTING Srila Prabhupada as the Initiating Guru---DIRECT INSULT committed BOTH by the so-called disciple of Srila Prabhupada and their conditioned soul guides (Narayana Maharaja or Sridhara Maharaja).

Adi 1.35 The Spiritual Masters The expert spiritual master knows well how to engage his disciple's energy in the transcendental loving service of the Lord, and thus he engages a devotee in a specific devotional service according to his special tendency. A DEVOTEE MUST HAVE ONLY ONE INITIATING SPIRITUAL MASTER BECAUSE IN THE SCRIPTURES ACCEPTANCE OF MORE THAN ONE IS ALWAYS FORBIDDEN.

3) RE: KAPINDRA SWAMI

Mukunda (Oldham) dasa: After he "banned" our center from Prabhupada Sankirtana Society he started to advertise his New York center in various web sites and newsletters as follows: NEW YORK "Prabhupada Sankirtana Society," Headquarters 48 Ave. B NY, NY 10009 (212) 674-0680, PSS108@juno.com. Did Srila Prabhupada every sanction his followers calling their particular temple the Headquaters of ISKCON ??? It does appear that the tamul disease has poisoned so many souls.

[PADA: Yes, Srila Prabhupada says that Los Angeles will be his Western headquaters. He uses the term. Now, you are saying that Srila Prabhupada is bogus, even poisonous, for his using this term? Why are you criticizing the acharya? And Srila Prabhupada said that Mayapura would eventually be the headquarters for India. So he used this term, and you are saying Srila Prabhupada's statements --are poison? Who are you to claim that Srila Prabhupada's words are poison? Kapindra also does not say his is "the headquarters of ISKCON." ISKCON is not even mentioned? He has a charity and it may have a legally named headquarters, just like Los Angeles is listed as the headquarters for ISKCON of California. As for Tamal, he does not list his Dallas temple as the headquaters of ISKCON, rather he has the Texas Krishna's, so you are confused and are making no sense?

Kapindra swami has read what you said and he sees what we all see, you are making public death threats on the internet which is illegal and he does not want to be connected to illegal behaviors, as the GBC has used for years. Nor do many other devotees want to join this illegal attempt either. You are also threatening molested children, just like the GBC's molesters have already threatened these same children. This is also not what most people want to do, start another GBC gestapo action against the victims of Sanat's inquistion against children. Most of us do not want to be publicly connected to your saying that molested children should be chopped up and fed to dogs. No other Church handles their victims like this either, because apart from being illegal, it is also heartless and cruel. And it may make the victims more aggressive.

You are simply behaving like the GBC's molesters already have towards these same victims, threats. It will not help. So you are harassing the victims and de facto protecting the culprits, as the GBC does. This is also how the GBC deals with things, death threats. Srila Prabhupada wanted us to follow the laws of the land, and death threats is not following the law. It is illegal. Kapindra has a legal duty to stop people from using his charity name if they chose to break the laws like yourselves. Death threats are also dangerous. If someone is killed, the FBI will be at your door in two seconds, and if you are using Kapindra's name they will go after him as well. He does not want to be conncected to your desires to get people murdered, which is very reasonable. It is also illegal, and it creates a bad public image. It means you are still in sympathy with the GBC's tactics. We no longer need these GBC thug activities. Go threaten to kill people elsewhere, not in the name of the Vaishnavas, because this has created VERY bad publicity already. As for your trying to say that making public death threats is harinama samkirtana, ummm, can you guys find some better dope to smoke?

thanks pd]

4) Subject: Re: UNITY IN DIVERSITY

PAMHO, AGTSP!

While I agree completely with your statements below, there are several aspects to the reform that will bring this good result about:

Dear Nara Narayana prabhuji, pamho, All glories to Srila Prabhupada. While i totally agree with the points you have raised about the Direction of Management we should always understand that the background of good management comes from preaching and simply changing the management doesn't solve the problems, the whole movement needs reform and that will come from hearing from Srila Prabhupada in association. This is my understanding.

>NNV das: The Direction of Management could also be called "the Direction on non-management". If you examine the precise language of the DOM and envision the ISKCON that would result from it's implementation, I think that its profound roots will begin to be revealed.

1. The DOM actually PROHIBITS management. Management clearly resides in the CONGREGATIONS as represented by the individual temple presidents.

2. The GBC has NO MANAGERIAL DUTIES WHATSOEVER. The GBC is meant to REGULATE the activities within the temples in a purely advisory capacity. There are no executive mandates built into the DOM.

3. The DOM presents a REVERSE OF HIERARCHY, as it requires the REAL POWER to reside in the hands of the CONGREGATION not the GBC. This is a clear message to each initiated member of Iskcon that EACH MAMBER IS HIS OWN AUTHORITY IN THE PURSUIT OF HIS SERVICE TO SRILA PRABHUPADA, AND THAT SRILA PRABHUPADA IS THE INDIVIDUAL AUTHORITY TO EACH INDIVIDUAL DISCIPLE!

THE FOLLOWING NEEDS TO BE IN PLACE FOR THE DOM TO WORK:

1. SRAVANAM:

Hearing from Srila Prabhupada in book, tape, CD. or video form is the ONLY business of the disciple. Sravanam must be COMPLETE before kirtanam will have any effect. This involves a profound study of the very NATURE of the tone, words, melodies, utterances of the Spiritual Master. This can be studied in depth and with full attention with a view to understanding the TRANSCENDENTAL "VORTEX" or "PORTAL" that constitutes the Via Media gift of the Spiritual Master that provides us with a "passageway" to Krishna Loka.

2. ISTAGOSTHI:

Without Istagosthi, all is lost. In the early movement, Srila Prabhupada required that each and every initiated disciple prepare a paper based on his realizations founded in Guru Shastra Sadhu, and present them to the assembled devotees ONCE A WEEK!

Istagosthi was alwo held, and He described it as "an arena where one can express doubt". In the course of Istagosthi, all considerations are present that lead to SIDDHANTA. Such siddhanta becomes the sound platform for discussions in futher Istagosthis, which in turn lead to even more advanced Siddhanta.

Istagosthi means,"circle of cow-herd boys" and refers to Krishna's Vatsalyarasa pastimes in Vrindaban, where HE WOULD SIT EQUALLY WITH THE OTHER COWHERD BOYS, AS THOUGH EQUAL, AND THEY WOULD ALL SHARE THEIR IDEAS AND VIEWS!

So when Istagosthi begins with KIRTAN and there are then obeisances offered to others in the mood that they are Krishna's associates and representatives, and then one forms a circle with no leader save a facilitator that keeps the ideas flowing, where there is no "authority" other than Srila Prabhupada and Krishna recognized, and whre SIDDHANTA is reached in the Sacred Gathering of the Assembled Devotees, and then prasadam is distributed, and kirtan once again........Srila Prabhupada cried out..."ISTAGOSTHI.....then the perfection!"

3. THE SIX LOVING EXCHANGES:

My son Kuvaleshaya das brahmachari has researched the Nectar of Instruction, and has discovered that Srila Prabhupadas has stated thus:

"The Iskcon Movement has been established to facilitate the Six Loving Exchanges".....Srila Prabhupada goes on to observe that the PHENOMENAL SUCCESS of the Ikcon Movement can be attributed to the SIX LOVING EXCHANGES acting as the dynamic of our temple and Sankirtan activities.

4. SANKIRTAN:

Until "chanting Hare Krishna Sankirtan is our life and soul, it must go on in all circumstances" we will be hollow and dry religionists and scholars. This public display of PURE UNALLOYED LOVE OF GOD is the BONA FIDE replacement of the mundane sounds of this material world. Wherever the Hare Krishna Mantra is publicly chanted, THAT PLACE BECOME PUREFIED AND A HOLY TIRTH!

So criss-crossing the towns and byways of this material world can tranform each spot of earth and sheltered spot into it' s ORIGINAL VAIKUNTHA FORM. Knowing this, we cnnot hesitate to flow through every street in every town, chanting and bringing about a revolution of hearing among the desperately READY AND WAITING sufferers that surround us on all sides. IF ONLY WE WERE READY, they would join us in a trice!

5. NAM HATTA:

Classes can immediately begin in houses here and there. There is no need for a swami or other leader. Each person reading the Purports that self illuminate their topic, will be enthralled in Srila Prabhupada's personal all embracing mercy.

An orange can be cut up for prasadam, Kirtan can be held with a guitar or tambouriine, they can be meat eaters, drinkers, etc.....BUT LET THEM BEGIN TO READ!..The rest will naturally follow. As a natural progression, their SRADDA will eventually pursh all other considerations aside.

NONE OF THE ABOVE FIVE ELEMENTS CAN BE ACHIEVED WITHOUT THE PRESENCE OF THE DIRECTION OF MANAGEMENT!

No manager will pursue so many "fruitless" tasks when SO MUCH MAINTENANCE WORK IS TO BE DONE, and SO MUCH MONEY TO BE COLLECTED, and so many distinctions of hierarchal authority are to be managed, respected and observed!

ONLY WHEN THE DIRECTION OF MANAGEMENT IS IN PLACE will the individual devotees understand that THEY ARE SPECIFICALLY EMPOWERED BY LORD KRISHNA TO DELIVER THE FALLEN SOULS WHEREVER THEY GO AND WHOMEVER THEY MEET.

So, if we want reform.....THE DIRECTION OF MANAGEMENT IS THE FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS, AND NO OTHER ATTEMPT AT REFORM WILL PRODUCE A RESULT OF COMPARABLE VALUE.

I hope that the above considerations have adequately demonstrated that the Direction of Management is not a mere formula for running an institution. If that were its purpose and intent, no one would understand what to do.

The DOM exists to EMPOWER THE INDIVIDUAL while providing a GATHERING PLACE FOR PERSONS OF LIKE MIND, scaled to a GLOBAL SCOPE, fulfilled in KRISHNA CONSCIOUSNESS. It is communal, democratic, and designed to work!

Your eternal servant,

NNV das
